NEC, a diversified Japanese technology company, and a major player in the PBX (private branch exchange), recently announced its decision to exit the on-premises unified communications (UC) business outside of Japan over the next few years. This move comes in response to the evolving market demand for cloud-based services as organizations worldwide undergo digital transformation.
NEC will no longer accept new purchase orders for on-premises Unified Communication products after December 31, 2024. Additionally, no new commitments, renewals, or extensions will be entered into beyond that date.
Hardware and software support services will cease after March 31, 2026, except for existing contractual obligations. The target date for completing the last shipment of products related to accepted purchase orders or any new commitments/renewals/extensions agreed between April 15, 2024, and December 31, 2024, is March 31, 2025.
This decision reflects the industry trend away from old landline phone systems and toward more advanced capabilities and compatibility.
