Landline Phones: Types, Features, and Benefits

Landline phones use metal wires to connect to the phone system or exchange. They have advantages over mobile phones, such as better sound quality, reliability and security, lower monthly fees, and more features.

Types of Landline Telephones

Landline phones can also be classified by the type of protocols or how they operate:

There are two main types of landline phones corded handset phones and cordless landline phones

Corded phones have a wire that connects the handset to the base unit.  Cordless phones are wireless and can be moved around within a certain distance.

Analog Telephone

This type of phone uses dual-tone multi-frequency dialing (DTMF). Each key tone is converted into two specific frequencies for sending to the phone switch. Analog phones are the most dependable and safe among all landline phone types. They provide fundamental features like caller ID and ringer volume control. Suppose you have a Traditional Phone System that works with wires. You want to use a new IP PBX System that works with the internet. But you don’t want to buy a new phone. Then you can use a special device called FXS Gateway that connects your old analog telephone to the new system. Your old phone can also work with a GSM SIM Network if you use another special device called a GSM Fixed Cellular Terminal. Some examples of analog telephones are the Hola TF700, Beetel M71, Panasonic KX-TG3711SX Cordless Phone, etc.

Digital Telephone

This type of phone turns the human voice’s analog sound waves into digital data. It compresses, encrypts, and sends the data over a network. Then, it turns the data back into analog sound waves at the other end. Digital phones have more functions than standard analog phones.

SIP/IP Telephone

This type of phone uses the internet to make and receive voice and video calls. SIP phones work on any network they connect to. They can change their location from one desk to another and still work. SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol, a communication protocol that handles multimedia sessions between two or more endpoints. Hardware SIP phones are physical devices that resemble traditional phones but connect to the internet via Ethernet cables or WiFi. You can make and receive calls with SIP Phone Software applications. They use the microphone and speakers of your computer or mobile device. You can install them on these devices.

Features of Landline Telephones

Basic Analog Landline phones offer features such as caller ID display, Call Forward, Call Transfer, Speakerphone, etc.

Digital Landline Phones offer advanced features such as Call Waiting, Call Hold, Mute, Auto Answer, Conference Calls, automatic redial, answering machine, speaker, adjustable handset volume, etc.

SIP Landline Phones offer even more advanced landline phones that have internet access, fax, and video calling capabilities and use different protocols.

Offices, homes, hotels, schools, hospitals, and other places with unreliable mobile connectivity mainly use landline phones. They are also vital during emergencies and specific purposes like getting internet access in case of emergencies
